How to keep glowing skin

Glowing dewy skin is everybody’s fantasy, as the largest organ in your body is your epidermis otherwise known as your skin. As a kid I struggled with exuding confidence due to the fact that I needed to learn more about my skin. I have vastly changed many aspects of my life and skincare routine which has helped my skin drastically. Below I made 10 steps that have helped my skin long term and the science behind each tip. I believe that prevention is better than treatment which is why I make sure to follow up with my routine with some things being done daily and others such as masking weekly.

  1. Eat healthy

Fruit and vegetables contain powerful antioxidants that help to protect skin from the cellular damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals, smoking, pollution and sunlight can cause wrinkling and age spots.Diets high in vitamin C and low in fats and carbohydrates are linked with fewer wrinkles and age-related skin dryness, and less skin thinning.

  2. change your Pillowcase

I change my pillow case daily as it helps prevent new breakouts from developing overnight. Your skin sheds daily which then starts to build up bacteria in your pillowcase which then leads to more breakouts, since changing my pillowcases daily I have realized how much better my skin has become. To minimize breakouts and reduce oil, I recommend cotton pillow cases. Breathable fabrics like cotton minimize the transfer of oil and help to reduce breakouts, and if your wanting to splurge silk pillowcases are even more breathable but a bit more pricey. And yes, these guidelines apply even if you wash your face right before bed each night.

  3. Getting Facials Biweekly

I get facials every other week as your skin turns over every 28 days, however for me personally I have realized that monthly facials aren’t exfoliating enough for me so I personally love to stay on top of it. Facials are a great way to rejuvenate the skin, remove wear and tear and tank-up the skin for more visibility while helping fade dark spots from long-term damage and bad habits.

  4. hydrate inside and Outside

If your skin doesn't get enough water, not only will it become dry, tight, and flaky, but it will also become even more prone to aging. The truth is that your body loses large quantities of water every day, so if you don't replace it by drinking more water, your skin will suffer the consequences. Hydration is key so I try to drink multiple glasses of water a day to stay hydrated as well as moisturizing day and night to hydrate inside and outside.

  5. wear sunscreen daily

Sunscreen is one of the single most important things you can do for your skin. When applied correctly, sunscreen protects your skin against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, which cause sunburn, skin cancer, and premature skin aging, like wrinkles and age spots. For the best protection, apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all skin not covered by clothing, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. To save time in your skin care routine, you can consider using a moisturizer that also contains sunscreen. However, while cosmetics that contain sunscreen are convenient, remember to reapply them in order to achieve the best sun protection. Keep in mind that since no sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s UV rays, it’s also important to seek shade and wear sun-protective clothing when outdoors, including a ligthweight long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection, when possible. For more effective sun protection select clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) label.

  6. Keep your hands off your face

I used to pick at my face all the time until I realized I was just making the situation worse. Whenever you touch your face, you transfer dirt, germs, and oil from your hands to your face. Do your best to leave your skin alone throughout the day. Avoid picking, popping or squeezing pimples, as this can cause scarring, so do your self a favor and just let it take its time.

    7.Lymphatic drainage massage

A great at-home treatment is lymphatic drainage massage which helps to keep skin clear, de-puffed, and glowing. For dry skin, massage in circular motions upward. Start at the base of the neck where your arteries are. Massage in gentle circles upwards, toward the jaw, up the sides of the face, and around the eyes. This will help coax nutrients into the tissue. You want to do the opposite motion and start on the top of the face by the eyes if you are prone to breakouts—this will draw the waste away. Lymphatic drainage massage can completely change the look of someone’s face and is a great, under-the-radar skincare tip, which is why I do it daily while moisturizing.

    8. Sleep everyday

After sunlight/UV exposure, the second cause of wrinkles is sleeping. Squishing your face into a pillow for approximately 2,500 hours per year while you sleep is like ironing wrinkles into the skin. Strategically position your head so the lower half of your face never touches your pillow. What this helps to prevent is a squishing of the face, which would exacerbate the wrinkles that come with age. These are the deep creases also known as the ‘parentheses’ or ‘marionette’ lines that run from the nostril to the corner of the mouth on both sides of the face and are enhanced every time you smile or laugh.

    9.Take Baths

One of my favorite things to do is to take baths as it relaxes your muscles and skin. It is my family secret for healing dry, sensitive skin. Boil a large pot of water with one cup of chamomile tea leaves and one cup of rosemary. Cook these for 15 minutes. Then strain and add this water to your bath. Not only will you feel relaxed from your day, but also, this potion will soothe your skin like nothing else. Dry patches and redness will disappear overnight!

    10. Masking is a must

Masking is a must to target skincare concerns, as well as a relaxation and pampering technique. Face masks can help address a whole array of skin concerns from oily and acne-prone skin to dry or sensitive skin; you just need to find the right mask for your skin type. Even if you don’t have time every day, do a clay mask once a week and a hydrating mask to hydrate as often as possible.
